By His Bootstraps is one of the Side Quests in The Outer Worlds. Side Quests are optional quests that players can chose to complete in order to obtain special rewards, XP, or reputation.
A labcoat by the name of Jameson is missing. There's raptidons and marauders about, so his boss, Anton Crane, is (somewhat belatedly) worried for him.
By His Bootstraps Objectives
- Rescue Jameson
Anton sent Jameson to Auntie Cleo's old Aunti-Biotics Lab, just down the road south of Roseway. Make sure he isn't raptidon chow.
- Talk to Anton
Jameson is pissed off but otherwise fine. Head back to Roseway to give Anton the good news.
By His Bootstraps Walkthrough
You will obtain this quest after landing in Roseway and entering the town. Find and talk to Anton Crane, and he will mention he left his protege at the lab during the commotion. Accept to rescue the labcoat to begin the quest.
Exit the town toward Roseway Gardens, and defeat the Raptidon that attack you as you approach Auntie-Biotics Lab 0013. Go inside, and you'll find a Vending Machine and a terminal that can be hacked to unlock the hallway lift, and you can read the Storage Facility Passcode. If you cannot hack it, take the left door from the entrance and make your way to the upper level or you can Lockpick the door on the right.
On the second floor, defeat several Raptidon and then loot Elite Troop Armor from a Corporate Commander corpse. An unlocked door nearby leands to an office. Within the office, pick up Gigantaur Energy Drink and interact with the terminal by it to learn about the Raptidon experiment. You can loot Standard Troop Helmet and a container.
Back in the large office where you fought the Raptidons, a locked door can be opened with Cleo Lab Office Keycard, or sufficient lockpicking. Once you've unlocked the door, you can go in and talk to Jameson. He recognizes you and asks you what you're doing here. Tell him Anton sent you and he'll complain that Anton is always double-checking everything he does. Jameson says that Anton does not care about him and instead just wants the precursors that he is holding. You can bring up that employee death would look back for Anton, ask him for the item to test the theory, or just get going.
Tell him about employee death: You will get 8250xp and Jameson will run off
Return to Anton and talk to him to gain Auntie Cleo Reputation, 1000 Bit Cartridge and 11,000xp.
If you have already been inside the other labs before or after accepting this quest, then you will find the door is already shredded by the Raptidons. If so, Jameson will have been mauled to death.
You can retrieve his keycard for 9000xp.
Returning to Anton you will get a somber reaction, 9000xp, 625xp, and a minor Auntie Cleo reputation loss.

I now know the *why* of his death. I went to the other facilities first. BUT the door wasn't shredded. I could see before I unlocked the door that he was still standing in that room and alive. The quest-log would also say the same thing. To check to see if he was alive or not. When I unlock the door the quest-log updates immediately and says he's dead and to collect his ID as proof. The quest marker indicates where his corpse would be but isn't there because he's alive and standing in front of me. it plays out like I saved him but when he exits the facility he's deleted from the outside world. His corpse will respawn when I leave and renter the facility so I can acquire the ID. I hope this story bug is fixed in another update soon. I'll probably reload a savefile and go save him immediately to get the preferred outcome.
not only was he dead. when i went back to Anton to turn in the quest the whole town suddenly started to attack me out of the blue.
He was alive for me, and went back to town. my objective says to talk to anton, but my only dialog options are to attack anton or end conversation. I can't talk to him about jameson at all to complete the quest
I literally walked in cleared the lab, talked to Jameson he ran out, then I head out to turn in my quests but the quest didn't update shows he's still in the lab. Walk back in and he's bodies dead. Annoying to complete it while he's alive and then get the he's dead ending
What is broken about this quest isn't the fact that he can be dead long before you are recruited to look in to him, it is that handing the quest in comes with a reputation loss. They shouldn't like you less for going out of your way to find out what happened to their man. You should gain reputation regardless of the outcome.
He was alive when I found him (able to engage in dialog) but he was dead on the quest description (“looks like the raptidons clawed their way through...”). He runs out the door and exits the building, but the quest indicator remains on the floor in the office where I found him. His body only appears in the office after I leave the building and re-enter. Creepy
For me, I entered the building while he was alive, but as soon as I attacked a robot on the lower level - the other enemies started fighting Jameson, and by the time I got to him they'd finished him off.
Was already dead for me. I am really glad that game is not "forcing the safe resolution" to the questlines. If you happen to start with other quests - cool and all, but the guy is dead. You didn't know it will happen? Well, it happens. Didn't you get annoyed, when the "save the village before sun is down" quest stayed active for few days? This one somewhat brings the memories from old RPGs and cRPGS - from the times before "min-maxing" and "completioning".
There seems to be a mechanic that counts the number of quests you complete once you land on roseway. You complete too many and he is dead. So do this early on to keep him alive.
He was dead for me as well. I did not have the quest. I did do the other facilities before this one though. Again, I did not speak to Anton before doing other quests. I didn't realize he had a time critical one, or I would have spoken with him promptly. I usually try to knock out side quests first.
Maybe when someone's life is in imminent mortal danger you should make that a priority. Don't blame the quest design. Obsidian makes games where your choices actually matter. Jameson sucks anyways. Interestingly enough at the end of this quest you can guilt Anton Crane into blowing his own brains out by constantly haranguing him about what a miserable POS he is for getting so many people killed to develop a chemical additive that's going to get even more people killed. This can also be achieved by just not returning his research, but that's no fun.
PC GamePass User here. Came to Roseway looking for the SAM part so i rushed straight to the other lab first. I completed the pistol schematic quest before accepting the one about this fella. Came in the lab to find him dead. I am incredibly disapointed by this quest design. I am kind of a completionist and this blew my enjoyment of the game right out the window
Same. He was dead for me. I even cleared out the auntie biotics lab before entering roseway and picking up the quests. Since I already went inside once i did this quest last in roseway and he was dead.
He was dead before I got the quest. I did Vulcan's hammer before even recieving the quest from Anton. I went straight to the lab after recieving the quest and no matter what I did he was dead.
Jameson was missing his head and leg when I found him. I think if you want to find him alive you have to do this quest first before any of the others in rosewater
Jameson was dead by the time I found him. Very dead. I guess you have to look for him first before completing "The Doom that Came to Roseway".
